The site is within Green Belt and the house had previously been extended beyond the policy limit. The challenge was to achieve an extension to accommodate a kitchen / dining / living area and to maintain access to the borehole that provides the drinking water to the property. By using Permitted Development rights we were able to achieve permission for an extension with sufficient floor area. However, the design was constrained by Permitted Development rights that restrict the height of side extensions to 4m. In order to match the pitch of the plain clay tiled roofs of the existing building a cruciform plan shape was devised that allowed the extension to wrap around the borehole in a courtyard whilst keeping within the height limit. Externally the extension is constructed of brick and flint under a steeply pitched plain clay tiled roof, whilst internally a light and area contemporary space has been achieved.
