Cedar Lodge

next project >
Cedar Lodge is a replacement dwelling within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In order to overcome planning restrictions on the size of replacement dwellings and to exploit the steeply sloping site, it is designed as an upside down house with the bedrooms at the semi-basement level and the living accommodation on the upper entrance storey. The living accommodation opens out onto a terrace allowing the southerly aspect and views across the valley to be enjoyed. The upside down approach has also allowed the living accommodation to be open to the underside of the roof and exploit the volume of the building to its full potential. An unusual feature of the house is a car lift which allows one car to be stored in the basement and a further car to be parked above. The house is also highly sustainable with all heating and hot water supplied by a Ground Source Heat Pump linked to boreholes.
